Davis Kaufman, Ph.D., is Vice President and General Manager of National Defense. As Vice President and General Manager of the National Defense strategic business unit, Kaufman is responsible for business development and program execution of Ball’s space systems for the defense and intelligence communities. Kaufman has more than 20 years of engineering, and management experience supporting the aerospace industry and government customers. Since joining Ball Aerospace in 2000, Kaufman has served in leadership positions for a variety of space system programs including the Orbital Express NextSat and the Space Test Program Standard Interface Vehicle. He also served as director of the National Security Space mission area within National Defense, where he oversaw a portfolio of critical programs with the National customer community. Kaufman began his aerospace career as a thermal engineer at Hughes Space & Communications Co. in El Segundo, Calif. He was awarded two patents for his research and development work and was the Thermal Engineering Lead for multiple satellite programs. As a System Engineering Lead, he directed overall technical execution for several geosynchronous spacecraft programs. Kaufman earned a Ph.D. and master of science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, a B.S.M.E. from Stanford, and a bachelor of art in Mathematics from Willamette University.
