Lieutenant Colonel Dennis Wille has been an active duty Army officer for almost 20 years. Originally an Armor Officer, Dennis transitioned to the Army's Space Operations career field ten years ago. Having earned a Master of Science in Space Systems Operations from the Naval Postgraduate School, Dennis has applied his space-centric education and training during numerous assignments to include during deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Currently, LTC Wille serves in the United States Army Space & Missile Defense Command / Army Strategic Command at Peterson Air Force Base as the Chief of Space Plans.
Considering the rapid growth in the number of smallsats/cubesats launched over the past several years, and the fact that more than 140 satellites with masses less than 10kg were launched in 2014, it is clear that this segment of the space industry is attracting a great deal of interest. This panel will address the past successes and shortfalls of design, development, and implementation, as well as looming opportunities, technical challenges, and future implications of launching smallsats.
